What Am I To Do?

What is going on in the world? Well, there’s pretty much one thing that people agree on, and that is that bad things are happening in the world. Violence and extremism in on the rise, affecting each and every one of us. The natural result is, for those of us who are aware of these things, that we form the common question, “What am I to do?”

We see situations which many of us (individually and collectively)have never faced before, and some which have not been experienced for generations. Circumstances  like these tug at the heart and soul, and seem to be escalating in frequency and severity. Multiple murders, high-profile moral failings, political unrest – and worse – cause us to try and make sense of the senseless. It’s no wonder that thinking about these things usually leads us to ask ourselves, “What am I to do?”

The events unfolding around us beg that question. It is on the lips of so many that we lose count of who has asked it. The very fabric of our life can appear to be tearing apart right before our eyes. For those in the world it is a time of upheaval and turmoil. Even those who know Christ can feel a sense of foreboding. And, because some of these events are so powerful and unpredictable, that feeling of helplessness can infiltrate our minds and hearts. “What am I to do?”

Times like this are not unique, but they are definitely unique to us. And as we draw closer to the coming of the Lord they will escalate. We have the promise of Scripture that this will be the case. So then, since God has foreseen these times, it would be logical for us to seek Him and His direction. Why? Because only He has the answers!

The world is lost because they don’t know what is coming next. If Jesus is real to us then we should not be surprised at all. The world is frightened because they don’t have any power to deal with it. We have the power of the Creator living inside us!   They don’t know who to turn to for guidance. All we need to do is follow Christ! They are frightened and desperate, and well they should be. However, as the people of God we shouldn’t be:

2 Cor 4:16-18

Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

So then, “What am I to do?” We are to have faith and confidence in the One Who holds all things in His hands. None of this has taken Him by surprise. None of this is outside His control. And He is well able to make everything work together for our good (Romans 8:28-30).

Considering what is going on in the world, that’s a fabulous place to be!
