July 4th
July 4th is celebrated as Independence Day in the United States. There are cookouts, family gatherings and fireworks. There’s swimming, playing and a lot of activity. There is a small amount of gratitude expressed for the 13 Colonies and their departure from the British Kingdom. Some even use this time to just spend their day doing nothing. But what does July 4th really signify? Is this all there is to it?
July 4th is so much more than cooking on a grill! It’s also much, much more than simple political freedom, or a license to commit various forms of indulgence. This country was founded upon the principle that men were free to worship God, and to conduct themselves according to His direction as provided in His Word – the Bible. The British government did not allow for that worship, so the framers of the Constitution sought to establish a form of government which would allow the people to govern themselves according to their conscience.
The Declaration of Independence provides some details about why the original American colonies decided to end the relationship they had with British rule, and we should look to those reasons today. They should still be a part of what we think and – ultimately – who we are as a nation;
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Many people use this sentence as the launching pad for various ideas. As an example, recent manipulations have applied this principle to those who choose same sex attraction as a way to justify that lifestyle. They claim a fundamental “right” to live lives the way they do. They demand recognition for what they feel and seek to impose that acceptance upon others who might object. They claim that the founding documents of American government assure them of this “right.”
Does that kind of thinking hold water? Is that what the Founding Fathers intended? Did they mean to create a nation which removed all forms of religion and moral standard? Hardly.
What was (and still is) the underlying concept to the quoted statement? It is that “all men are created…” Not only does this document state the obvious, but that any authority we have as human beings is given by that Creator. They are “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights…” We derive our rights from the Author of life, Who is God. Not just “god,” but the God of the Bible!
When people seek to fulfill their personal desires (regardless of Biblical instruction) a conflict will ensue. The government of the United States was founded upon the principles of the Word of God and, while not mandated by the Declaration of Independence and US Constitution, the rights and privileges we enjoy are intertwined with a responsibility to know what the Word of God claims as the truth. It is the standard to which we are to hold people accountable for their actions.
It’s important to know what motivated the founders of our republic. By understanding how they viewed Man and government we gain an understanding of why they formed things the way they did. Let’s take a minute and look at what some prominent Americans thought about our national heritage, the influence of Christianity and the Bible upon our society, and to Whom we should ultimately owe our allegiance to;
”The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity. I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.”
